So let me get this right...a man who writes such things has the nerve to all someone a racist!!?? Are you serious?
"As always, whitey now sits in judgment of me, preparing to cast my fate. It is your decision either to let me blow with the wind as a nonentity or to encourage the development of self. Allow me to prove myself."

I think you forgot to add the line directly above that statement:
“To his eventual embarrassment, he wrote in his Yale application”
It was the man’s application to Yale. The man was a product of his environment, as we all can become, on the front lines of trying to end segregation. A mindset of that epoch in American History.
Furthermore, this statement sounds more of a plea for respect than a racist comment.
“…whitey now sits in judgment of me, preparing to cast my fate…Allow me to prove myself.”
Sounds like a plea to me. A damn good plea at that, if he was accepted into Yale, and consequently graduated summa cum laude (Latin for “with heist praise”).
The man is an ideologue in every sense of the word, but not necessarily a racist. I cannot say if he is a racist, but this statement does not justify calling him one. It seems more fitting to say there are obvious culture differences between all races, and that it is better to recognize this than to pretend it doesn’t exist for the sake of our fragile selves. Gates just happens to be recognize this fact, as well as I do.

p.s. Further, yet again, knowing how old this statement was, and the fact that it cause him later “embarrassment”, this post would then seems to suggest that one cannot change their mind, or better yet, one cannot mature intellectually as one gets older. Do you agree with this, that we cannot change their mind or grow and mature intellectually?
First of all yes I do think that one can change their mind and mature intellectually as one gets old, but this person in question failed to do so. At the start of the police questioning him he automatically decided not to corporate. He because rude and belligerent and the first words out of his mouth were something about race. Now who is at blame here? The police officer doing his job as dispatched or the man who would not recognize authority based upon race? That is what is at question. Obviously Gates has a problem with "whitey". He has made that a point in the past and made that a point again when a white officer tried to arrest him. Also, might I point out that I did not once call him a racist!!! I mealy pointed out that he has some nerve calling the police officer one. But let me make it clear now, yes I do think that Gates is a racist. I think that he is racist against white people. That is possible...people of a race other than white can be racists.
The police officer in this case was doing his job. It just happened that it was one of the presidents friends...and to be honest the president needs to back off. This matter is not any of his concern. He has a nation to worry about.
As far as a plea, I think that is pathetic. One should not have a plea to let them into a college based upon their race. They should be admited into a college based upon their ability, once again RACE should have nothing to do with it. How do we expect to stop racism if it is a topic that is brought up constantly. Lets judge people based upon their ability not upon their race, creed, color or religion.
ps. I am fully aware of what summa cum laude means...thanks.
